The research and creative programme CLÁSSICOS EM CENA aims to raise awareness of classical Portuguese drama through staged readings. For this 11th edition, the programme includes performances of the anonymous plays Auto Guiomar do Porto and Auto das Capelas, and Auto dos dois ladrões by António Lisboa – a trilogy that explores themes such as forbidden love, lies, theft, escape and justice.
The endeavour to bring classical Portuguese drama to the stage has sought to draw attention to the richness, uniqueness and even innovation of this theatrical corpus, both as cultural heritage and as a forum for reflection on the great timeless questions inherent to the human condition. This approach and theatrical vision have demonstrated that 16th-century Portuguese theatre is a form of theatre worthy of being staged and of standing shoulder to shoulder with the European theatre of that era.
